The words “holding fast”, make me think of times when we MUST HOLD ON: water skiing, scaling Half Dome or helping children cross a street.
No one describes a situation of “holding fast” better than Elder Holland in a 5 min video describing two boys who free climb a sheer cliff and find, in terror, that they have been trapped by an overhang just a few feet from the top –
He points out that there is no one more able to “hold us, lift us and not let us fall”, than our Savior Jesus Christ. We “hold fast” to him through our covenants.
The questions/actions below can help you focus this week on holding fast to the Savior through key covenants. Please consider these personally or discuss as a family.
Baptism – Mosiah 18:9 – We covenant to comfort those in need and stand as witnesses of God in all things and all places.
- What have we done recently to comfort and minister to those around us?
- How can we stand as a witness of the Savior in social media? (“click like” on the Come unto Christ in Rocklin and Granite Bay Facebook page)
- How could we be a witness of Christ in our now limited interactions with others today?
Sacrament – D&C 20:77, 79 – We will always remember Him… and always have his Spirit to be with us
- How can we remember the Savior this week? Consider a prayer of thanksgiving or repentance. What action does he want us to take?
- Discuss with others how have we felt his Spirit in the last week? Did we receive an impression? Did we feel comforted?
Temple Ordinances & Covenants – D&C 105:10-11 – Be taught more perfectly, continue faithfully and be endowed with power from on high.
- For those that have received their endowment, could you spend 15 minutes mentally walking through the content presented in the temple and remember associated covenants?
- Can you spend some time this week preparing a family name to take to the temple? Could you perform one batch of indexing?
- Could you study and document some family history? As we’re going through tough times, could you study how your parents or grandparents made it through World War II, Vietnam or other strife and gain strength from their experiences?
I dearly miss the interaction, learning and inspiration that occurs in our Sunday School classes and am hopeful that our great teachers can facilitate these discussions again soon. I am grateful for the Savior, for his love and his outstretched hands that have held me fast and lifted me and my family through challenges to heights we could never have imagined.
Take Care,
David Russell (Stake Sunday School Presidency)
