Recent news stories have given us all a glimpse of the upheaval in Afghanistan that has displaced thousands of Afghan families. These families are arriving in many cities in the US – Sacramento is one of the major landing spots for them.
Government, community, individuals, and faith-based groups are working hard to make sure these families feel welcome and safe in our community.
We, as a church, are supporting the resettlement of Afghan families who are arriving in the Sacramento region. Working with the International Rescue Committee (IRC), the wards and stakes in and around Sacramento are providing support to these families by generating, storing, and organizing donations of household goods. Once these donations are organized, they are loaded and moved into homes found by the IRC.
Our goal is to provide a warm and comfortable home for these families who have experienced so much turmoil and uncertainty. It is heartwarming to see our members in action all across the country in this humanitarian crisis. These brothers and sisters are truly “strangers that we need to take in.” Today, we have an opportunity to practice our true religion, to clothe the naked, provide drink for the thirsty and comfort to weary souls.
We have been asked by many of you “How can I help?” Members of the Church and the community across the Sacramento region have organized to focus on two very important parts of this resettlement – food and housing. This post is directed specifically on how you can help in the housing effort. We have been asked by the IRC to support them in both the donation of household goods and in the actual physical effort of moving those household goods into homes.
